Grandma is here visiting me. I felt her presence when I cracked the egg into the batter as I was making pan-fried cake for breakfast. Grandma passed away in 2004, the same year I moved to Canada. In Edmonton's cold, snowy, dark mornings, making breakfast alone in the kitchen, I thought of Grandma making green onion pancakes over the beehive coal stove in our home in Suzhou.
